Welcome to the Carleton County Animal Shelter (CCAS) website. It is the only animal shelter between Fredericton and Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada. The shelter has space for up to eight large dogs, a litter of puppies and 60 cats, although it can take in up to twice that many felines as they require less space than dogs. Small dogs and kittens go to foster homes. Other animals it has taken in include rabbits, ferrets, rats and even horses.
CCAS is known for their non-euthanasia policy: no animal at the shelter in Debec is routinely put down simply because a home cannot be found for it. Euthanasia is only used when absolutely necessary. The shelter does have a policy of spaying and neutering pets, to help reduce the number of unwanted puppies and kittens coming through their doors. If a pet has not been neutered before its adoption, this is done by a local vet within the price of the adoption fee. Shelter staff note that this policy seems to be helping with dogs, as the number of puppies taken in has decreased in recent years.
The shelter offers regular fundraisers that have become very popular and raised awareness to their program. 'Pet’s Photos with Santa’ has now become a popular annual feature of the fundraising calendar, thanks to the efforts and skills of the NBCC Woodstock Digital Photography students, the generosity of their hosts Surgain Feeds & Needs in Woodstock and the help of several volunteers. Other events include in the Spring – Dream Vacation Raffle and in the Fall – Dinner and Auction with donated items.
